About Boca Raton, Florida Community

Boca Raton was a small farming town of a few hundred people when it was incorporated on May 26, 1925, at the height of the Florida land boom. The town council hired architect Addison Mizner to plan a resort city, and his Cloister Inn, finished in 1926, survives today as The Boca Raton.

Mizner's Mediterranean style still shapes the city's look, from the Old Floresta neighborhood to the original Town Hall on North Federal Highway. In 1942 the Army Air Corps opened its only wartime radar training school on the land that later became Florida Atlantic University and the Boca Raton Airport, and the city grew quickly after the war.

Boca Raton is now the southernmost city in Palm Beach County, with about 97,400 residents in the 2020 census. Mizner Park, opened in 1991 on the site of the old Boca Raton Mall, anchors downtown, and the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex protects coastal hammock along the barrier island. A 2018 community study counted roughly 134,200 Jewish residents in South Palm Beach County, about one third of the area's population.
