About Boynton Beach, Florida Community

Boynton Beach takes its name from Major Nathan S. Boynton, a Civil War veteran from Port Huron, Michigan, who came to the area in the 1890s and built the oceanfront Boynton Hotel. Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband Fred filed the original plat for the Town of Boynton in 1898, and the town was formally incorporated in 1920. It became the City of Boynton Beach in 1941, and a 1913 school building near Ocean Avenue and Seacrest Boulevard lives on as the Schoolhouse Children's Museum.

Growth after World War II was rapid, more than tripling the population in the 1950s, and development spread steadily westward through the 1980s. Today Boynton Beach is home to about 80,400 people, according to the 2020 census, and carries the motto America's Gateway to the Gulfstream. Green Cay Wetlands offers a long elevated boardwalk through about 100 acres of marsh, and the western half of the city is lined with active adult communities that are home to many Jewish families.
